China Warns of AI Dangers in U.S., Cites Need for Global Safety Measures

The Chinese government has strongly criticized the rapid and uncontrolled growth of artificial intelligence in the United States, warning that it could lead to global disasters.

In an interview with Russia’s TASS news agency, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhu accused American tech companies of putting profits ahead of public safety. He pointed to troubling incidents involving AI, such as chatbots allegedly encouraging teenagers to take their own lives.

“AI in the U.S. is mostly developed for money,” Zhang said. He added that the U.S. government allows companies too much freedom in AI development, in an effort to dominate the global tech scene — something he believes could lead to tragic consequences.

One major example Zhang highlighted was the January 1, 2025 explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. He claimed it was the first attack ever planned using ChatGPT, a popular AI chatbot, showing how dangerous unregulated AI can be.

Zhang warned that without proper controls, AI could become a serious threat to human safety.

He contrasted this with China’s more cautious and organized approach. He praised policies like the “Basic Safety Requirements for Generative Artificial Intelligence Services” (March 2024) and the “AI Safety Governance Framework” (September 2024), which set up structured rules and safety checks for how AI is developed and used in China.
